John Murdoch

John Murdoch has devoted decades to the study and teaching of representational painting and drawing. He produces both portraiture, figurative and still life paintings with an otherworldly edge, often using hand-ground paints and gold leaf on wood panel or canvas.

Murdoch’s artistic lineage traces back directly, student to teacher, to Empire-era genius Jacques Louis David. Today, he teaches using the same rigorous French “atelier” system of training that has been passed down through the centuries. His training includes The American Academy of Art in Chicago (on scholarship) and Atelier LeSueur in Minnesota. He won the John and Anna Lee Stacey Scholarship while finishing his studies at the School of Representational Art in Chicago.

His work has been shown in the US and Europe, including shows at the Ellarslie Museum in Trenton, NJ; The Lancaster Museum of Art, PA; The Ernst Museum in Budapest, and at Mercer County College, NJ. His work has been featured in American Artist Magazine, International Artist Magazine, The New York Times, The Intelligencer, The Times, and other publications. He is currently represented by Gallery Piquel in New Hope, PA.  John founded and teaches at Gold Light Atelier, in Bucks County PA, where he passes down the apprentice-style training of the masters.

Jill A. Rupinski

Jill Rupinski studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and received a four-year certificate in 1977. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Philadelphia College of Art in 1981, which is now the University of the Arts, in Philadelphia, PA. Jill studied independently with various portrait and landscape artists; Lajos Markos, Wolf Kahn, Louis B. Sloan and Roswell Weidner were noteworthy influencers during her training.

Jill focuses on both portraiture and landscape, and has painted many commissioned portraits. However, both her work in portrait and landscape is narrative in content. For the past decade she has drawn inspiration from contemporary issues and national events specifically for her paintings using landscape imagery. Once she obtains her idea she works from drawings, memory and imagination using classic compositional devices and traditional materials.

In addition to her studio work, Jill is an Associate Professor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (‘PAFA’) in Philadelphia, PA. She has taught for over twenty years at PAFA and at Wayne Art Center in Wayne, PA.  Her work is represented by Cerulean Arts Gallery and Studio in Philadelphia, PA.  "American Landscape 2001" / 48"x78" / Oil on Canvas

Neilson Carlin

While earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Neilson was fortunate to study with Martha Erlebacher and Renee Foulks, both leading contemporary figure painters. He concluded his formal studies privately at the Aviano Academy of Fine Art under figure painter Michael Aviano. Through Aviano, Neilson traces his instructional lineage directly to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of 19th century France.

Neilson specializes in portrait, figurative and still life painting. He maintains both an active gallery and commission career. His commissioned work includes portraits and sacred art. Recently, Neilson was one of just four artists from across the country commissioned to complete a 14-month project culminating in the execution of four, 11’ x 4.5’ multi figure paintings in the Shrine of our Lady Guadalupe in La Crosse, WI.

In addition to his gallery painting and commissioned work, he has taught for more than a decade at his school, Studio Rilievo School of Classical Painting in Kennett Square, PA. Through the studio, he is training the next generation of artists and advancing the classical realist tradition.
